Paris Brest in Paris

Fun fact: despite the way I'm holding it in this photo it's actually designed to be reminiscent of a bicycle wheel and as it turns out I could have just as easily posed for this photo in Brest.

Back in 1891, well before this newfangled interloper called the Tour de France there was a bike race from Paris-Brest-Paris and "some chef" (details are sketchy) created this delicious sweet treat to commemorate the occasion. And well they did; while the race is seldom heard of the Paris Brest is still going strong. I've been seeing them more and more lately in patisseries and cafes in Melbourne (Australia).

I most certainly did pick Paris for this photo though. It could have been the iconic Eiffel Tower in the background but on both of our trips to Paris we stayed in the vicinity of Montmartre and it came to be somewhat symbolic of Paris for us. So that's the Basilica of the Sacré Cœur in the background.
Yep. Monmatre is lovely but due to a few big names in art being attached to it there's a heap of modern day "artists" hanging around flogging their works. And the usual problems of high tourist traffic areas. "Sacrebleu!/Sacrecoeur!" we'd say interchangeably and giggle to each other, even though despite the silly template stereotype you don't tend to actually hear French people say that (though, funny story, we did hear "oh la la" a few times, which also cracked us up).

What are these things anyway? It's choux pastry in a ring (i.e. wheel shape) with praline flavoured whipped cream in the middle.

Really though... maybe I should go back and do this photo again; pausing on my bike ride between those two French cities. Funding anyone?
