Swiss Brown Mushrooms in Switzerland


As I mentioned in a previous post Bern looks to be a pretty cool place. This is going a few years back now. Frankly, with the current Hipster saturation levels "cool" is pretty run-of-the-mill, but, seriously, this place we ate at was totes cool, before it was cool (ha ha! I guess!).

Lucky we found a nice place to eat too, because while we got to walk around the lovely streets, etc the fact that we managed to arrive on a public holiday meant that we didn't get to do much else. As it inconvenient and it felt at the time it turns out we managed to find ourselves in Bern on the very holiday for which it was named; Saint Berchtold is the day celebrating the day a Duke killed a bear, or something. I've linked you there to an entertaining little page. The official Swiss page says something like "Is a special Sunday". Ja, richtig. (I assume that still checks out in Swiss German).

Anyway Swiss Browns right! Now they are telling me they are called Italian Browns or Roman or even a Portobello mushroom. It's all very confused. We should probably just agree to all call them Agaricus Bisporus and be done with it!

Well, sure, but in Eastern Australia we call them "Swiss Browns" and here I am eating them, and a literal heap of other mushroom types on top of a rösti. Which is frankly another quite Swiss thing. Also very delicious.

If you are into mushrooms and also websites similar in tone to the one you are currently reading you will find this mushroom appreciation site hard to cap. You may learn a thing or two (they don't mention the Swiss Brown though sadly).

Of course there's even more than "heaps" of mushrooms out there in the world and personally I think it's pretty fascinating. I'd love to be knowledgeable and brave enough to go out looking for pine mushrooms and the like but for now "Discretion is the Better Part of Valour".

Not sure who originated that quote... but I'm sure they were a really fun guy.
