French Toast in France


As I've been on France a while I was planning to serve up a little something else from my stocks, but as today happens by chance to be Bastille Day, well, this seems appropriate.

We opted for an apartment for our accommodation, which as well as being great for momentarily deluding ourselves that we were now living in Paris, allowed us to cook meals. So here I am at the kitchen table enjoying some delicious French Toast with bacon and maple syrup.

I'll probably be lazy and link you to the wikipedia article at this point, because it has what appears to be a good section on the etymology and first recorded examples. As it's a very simple thing, and ideal for adding a bit more zest and nutrition to what might otherwise be a meal made up of some old bread, its origins are not far from what I was expecting.


Not surprisingly in France it's called something else; pain perdu or "lost bread", as a nod to its origins and the fact that stale bread is still often used due to its relative hardness (I prefer a nice robust sourdough instead).
